The Seacoast Camera Club will next meet on December 12, 2017 in the Portsmouth Public Library in the Hilton Garden room for its traditional holiday party.  Because we are meeting in the library, and not at our usual Forestry Center location, members are asked to bring some light appetizers, snacks or desserts to share with the other members (a full blown holiday pot luck meal is not feasible at the library).  Also, new member Scott Faiia will share images taken during his 28 years in Asia, nine years in East Africa, three years in the Caribbean and three years in Egypt. His serious interest in photography developed as a means to interact with the diverse people and cultures he encountered in his work. In many ways this interaction, and the possibility of capturing through photography the hope and beauty he encountered, was a counterbalance to the grim realities he grappled with in his relief and development work. Scott has an extensive portfolio of images from Nepal and will share some of his favorite images at the meeting. His main interest in Nepal has been in documenting the vibrant culture and way of life in the Kathmandu valley.

Note: We will not meet on December 26, 2017.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday Oct 10th 6:00-8:00 PM, at the Urban Forestry Center in Portsmouth.  Original guest speaker Joe Stevens has a last minute conflict.  Instead, Jay Goldsmith will join our meeting to present a program on portrait photography.

Jay is a highly accomplished local photographer.  He is about to open his 3rd show at Discover Portsmouth, featuring portraits of artists.  He will show his images and discuss how he approaches portrait photography that results in the most successful images.
Jay describes his approach as follows: “I often try to key into some features of the sitter’s day to day life and with artists frequently something somewhat removed from that person’s art.  Often I use a prop to indicate something otherwise unseen about the subject: a personal library, for example, or a piano, or a hand made easel,  a length of canvas, a fancy hat.  I use body language and pose.  An artist may not enjoy sitting and I may only show a small part of her, perhaps peeking around the edge of a painting.  I am drawn to the geometry of a location and that can become the dominant visual: a large piece of torn paper (which I would ask the artist to tear) or the architectural lines of a room.  I try to meet with the subject a week or so before the shoot and plan the session.”

Fall is fast approaching and the first 2017-2018 meeting of the Seacoast Camera Club will feature presentations by members.  Members are invited to submit up to three images each.  Those members submitting will present the images in a “show and tell” format for all to enjoy details of the image and its background.  This is a chance for us to catch up with each other after our break and to share some of your recent images. No judging and no competition – just a chance for members to show the attendees some of your work.  Non-members are invited to attend.

Please bring your JPEG images on a USB flash drive and we’ll transfer them to the club’s PC upon your arrival.  Any size is OK, but our projector works best at 1024 px wide x 768 px high.

NOTE: If any members have equipment or photo related items that you wish to sell, you can either bring a list of those items with prices or, if the items are small, bring the items to the meeting and share with those attending.

The meeting will be Tuesday, Sept 12 at our usual time and place – 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Urban Forestry Center on Elwyn Road in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
